Nevada posts 7.7% unemployment in August — highest in the nation

Nevada’s unemployment rate remained at 7.7% in August — the highest in the nation — according to the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR).

Three states — New York, New Mexico and California — had 7.6% unemployment.

Amodei still considering run for Nevada governor

Nevada's 2nd U.S. House Rep. Mark Amodei, R-Carson City, said on Nevada Newsmakers that he has not ruled out a run for governor in 2022 and threw some shade at the five Republicans who have already committed to run.

"I will tell you this: I am not taken with the field so far," Amodei told host Sam Shad.

City of Reno employees face vaccine mandate.

The rise of the Delta variant and continuing resistance have forced the federal government and major corporations to begin declaring vaccine mandates. We can now add the city of Reno to that growing list.  Friday morning city employees saw an email from City Manager Doug Thornley warning they would soon be required to be vaccinated. Thornley said it was the “next step” to ensure public health and safety.

Nevada has become more populous and more diverse over the past decade, adding 404,000 residents, with about 4 out of 10 identifying as Hispanic or Latino according to the U.S. Census Bureau.  The majority-minority state ranked as the United States’ third most ethnically diverse, according to a Diversity Index published by the agency.  Mirroring the rest of the nation, Nevada’s urban counties grew more significantly than its rural counties. More than 95% of the population growth in Nevada occurred in Clark and Washoe counties, home to Las Vegas and Reno respectively.

Marine Officer Who Blasted Leaders over Afghanistan Withdrawal Is in the Brig

Lt. Col. Stu Scheller, the Marine officer who posted a viral video demanding accountability from military leaders for the failures in Afghanistan, is now in the brig, Marine officials confirmed Tuesday.  Scheller is "currently in pre-trial confinement" while he awaits an Article 32 preliminary hearing, Marine Corps spokesman Sam Stephenson said in a statement.
